Architectural Windows: Sliding Door
Glazing/Finishes
Glazing
Glazing for impact-rated (hurricane) windows is normally heavy laminated (overall thickness ranging from 7/16” to 9/16”) with exterior and interior glass lites (often heat-strengthened) bonded to PVB and other interlayers.
Impact-rated windows accept either single glazing or insulating glass units.
Single-glazed windows use heavy laminated glass as described above.
Insulating glass units normally use laminated as described above on interior lites. Exterior lites may be ¼” heat-strengthened glass, often tinted (‘turtle glass’) and/or Low E. Air-space of ½” is typical.
In all cases, impact-rated glass is only one part of an impact-rated window or door system. Ultimately, the window or door, plus the installation methodology, must undergo extensive testing (air, water, structural, missile-impact, cyclic, etc), certified by a professional engineer’s analysis, before receiving approval for use in a given jurisdiction. It should be noted that requirements and approval processes vary between jurisdictions, and change frequently as well.
See individual Glazing/Finishes information in each product section, ie. Insulating Glass, on this website for comprehensive glazing information.
